Who we are – and why we exist

Greenlife Industry Australia (GIA) is the national peak body for Australia’s nursery industry.

That means we represent the whole greenlife industry at the national level – working with government, industry groups and research partners to make sure the needs of growers are heard, understood and supported.

We’re a not-for-profit and a registered charity, here to make a difference – not a profit.

Our members include state-based nursery associations and other organisations who want to see the greenlife sector grow stronger, smarter and more sustainable.

Greenlife means plants grown, sold and loved - from seedlings and shrubs to fruit trees and vines. Another word for nursery - same industry, different name.

What does a ‘peak body’ actually do?

A peak body is the main voice of an industry, think of it as a central hub that helps:

  • connect people – across businesses, states, supply chains and government
  • solve problems – like pests, skills shortages or trade barriers
  • guide funding – so levy money is invested in the right projects
  • shape decisions – by showing government how our industry works and why it matters.

We do the behind-the-scenes work that helps the whole industry thrive.

What we focus on

From biosecurity to urban greening, GIA works to support growers and promote the role of plants in Australia’s future.

We focus on:

  • keeping pests and diseases out
  • helping growers adapt to climate and environmental challenges
  • supporting skills, training and workforce development
  • advocating for research, innovation and investment
  • showing how plants improve communities, cities and lives.

Why it matters

Plants aren’t just pretty – they’re powerful.

They cool our cities, clean our air, protect our soil, support biodiversity, and make our homes, streets and schools healthier and more liveable.

We work to make sure Australia backs the people who grow them.

Urban greening helps keep cities healthy.
Plants aren’t a nice-to-have – they’re fundamental to how we live, work and thrive. If we want a resilient, liveable Australia, greenlife has to be key to the plan.
