For growers scaling up, the challenge isn’t just producing more – it’s maintaining consistency, traceability and control as volumes increase.
At Westgrow Farm Trees, rapid growth in demand for native plants exposed the limits of informal systems. Record keeping varied, plant tracking was harder to maintain at scale, and quality relied heavily on manual oversight. As volumes increased, so did the risk of inconsistency, gaps in traceability and operational strain.
Through the levy-funded GrowConnex program, Westgrow worked to formalise and strengthen these systems – turning what had been ad hoc processes into structured, repeatable workflows that could support growth.
“As demand for native plants grew, we realised strong systems were just as important as strong plants,” said owner Brayden West.
“GrowConnex helped us formalise what we were already doing well and gave us confidence to take on larger projects and new markets.”
What changed in practice:
Standardised plant growth, inspection and inventory tracking → consistent processes across the business, reducing variability as volumes increase
Structured management of over four million trees → maintained quality at scale, without relying on individual oversight
Weekly inspections embedded into routine operations → earlier issue detection and stronger overall plant health
Improved traceability and visibility → clearer tracking of stock, reducing risk and supporting customer confidence
A key milestone was achieving Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA) accreditation, supported by GrowConnex unlocking access to larger and more complex commercial opportunities.
These changes didn’t just improve operations –they made scale sustainable. Westgrow can now fulfil larger orders with greater consistency, without adding unnecessary administrative burden.
This highlights a broader insight for nurseries: as businesses grow, it’s not production that becomes the constraint – it’s the systems that sit behind it. Investing in structured, repeatable processes is what allows scale without losing control.
